Hackers have wasted no time with the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch – discovering its secrets before it was even officially released. Within just weeks, one talented individual known as ‘stacksmashing‘ dug into the system’s code and worked out how to get id Software’s classic first-person shooter DOOM up and running.
While the results weren’t exactly pretty, it was only just the beginning. The same hacker – once again, with the help of fellow coder Konrad Beckmann – has now got some more retro classics up and running like the original Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Contra. Take a look below:
At the moment, getting these other retro titles working on the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch isn’t exactly easy. You obviously have to physically open up the system to add more ROM files and even then, you’ll need the assistance of custom hardware and some special tools.
The same hacker, stacksmashing, says they are looking to publish a full guide on how to unlock the Game & Watch.
Are you impressed by all of these games running on Nintendo’s latest hardware release? Do you think the system should have included a larger library of games? Share your thoughts below.
